john kerry made a surprise visit to baghdad earlier today where he spoke to prime minister nuri al maliki. secretary kerry is now in amman, jordan, and so is chief foreign affairs correspondents andrea mitchell, traveling with the secretary of state. she joins us by phone now. andrea, what did secretary kerry accomplish with this trip to baghdad? >> reporter: well, it was a very tough trip and a tough message, because we went to baghdad, a quick visit. surprise, under tight security and secrecy, for obvious reasons, because ten years ar the war, there still are terror attacks. last week, when dozens were killed in baghdad. he was in a secure place in the embassy and then visiting prime minister maliki and the speaker of the parliament in iraq in their residences, but his message to mallski that the maliki government is permits iran to send weapons and fighters, overflight, loaded with weapons and fighters, to prop up assad in syria and that this is something that americans and the congress, that the administration, cannot understand or tolerate, and as kerry told us afterwards, it
as well. could this be obama helping to set up secretary of state john kerry for what you talk about is the larger issue of peace negotiations down the line? >> yes, and i believe secretary kerry is very committed to a middle east peace process. i think it's long overdue. and i think the president's got to give him the political cover that secretary kerry would need. and key is going to be the israeli public. and the relationship with president netanyahu. you know you what say candid or business-like in diplomacy, it means that it's not a perfect relationship. but, you know, a lot of leaders, they develop this relationship. a better relationship, over time, and i think that's what the president is doing. >> so as long as the business relationship can produce positive business results it's a good thing. let's talk about iran. the nuclear issue that's a top issue for president obama's agenda. on friday, defense secretary chuck hagel said there are these plans to beef up missiles after north korea said it was going to be trying to have its preemptive nuclear strike against the u.s. or l
. secretary of state john kerry. martin fletcher is live for must tel aviv with more. martin, good to see you, sir. who is kerry planning on meeting with? >> reporter: well, hi, craig. he is going to be seeing the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyau this evening, having dinner together. i guess if president obama's visit here to try to turn things around was step one in that attempt, step two is a visit now of the secretary of state john kerry. he is going to be meeting with the prime minister. he met earlier in the day in jordan with the palestinian leader, mahmoud abbas. his talks are all going to be about how it put into action what president obama talked about, which was a renewed peace process between israeli and the palestinians. that's what his job is going to be. there is hope there will be serious negotiations in tweaks if the americans have their way. >> one of the key headlines from the trip is the diplomatic deal he broader between israel and turkey. how significant is this olive branch between the two countries? >> reporter: i think very significant, craig. very significant

we hear from this administration is that the new secretary of state john kerry will be staying behind, will circle back to jerusalem on saturday night, meet with netanyahu and his people and try to reinvigorate it. so there was that attempt. we're seeing reports that abbas, the palestinian leader, is now willing to forego his requirement that a settlement freeze exists and be declared by netanyahu openly before any peace talks resume. it seems as though the palestinian stance is softening. but it is not front and center. the president tried to put it there today while at the same time delivering what i think israelis wanted to hear about iran and about syria. >> jamie, andrea brings up a good point, that abbas has, in a sense, reached out and said, okay, we will consider this aspect of things. how key is that to starting any sort of peace talks again? >> well, that has been the block to actual meetings. the palestinians have said until there's a settlement freeze, the position that the united states had taken as well that andrea referred to, until there is such a freeze, then there wo
